The web site for Summerfest 2005 is up
If you go to the bottom of the page they have a tentative list of who will be this years speakers.
Summerfest is a yearly gathering of vegans and vegetarians. It is 5 days of vegan food prepared by gourmet chefs, classes, workshops, and the most positive vibes you will find at any gathering.
There have been many talks by vegan medical doctors and registered dietitians on nutrition and health info in addition to all sorts of interesting workshops.
Hundreds of vegetarians/vegans, great food, fun classes and very, very positive atmosphere!

Does Electricity kill a large amount of animals or not?

I notice in this article that electricity can be generated by such means as coal, oil, hydropower and nuclear power. I'm wondering if they do a large or negligible harm to living animals both directly as an ingredient or indirectly such as in the processing (of hydropower with fish).

Gasoline Vegan?

OK this is the first biggie question I have to ask and it's separate because I need an answer soon. Do cars through gasoline use animal derived ingredients that they have to kill to or is it clean up to the point it only uses animals that have long since died (prehistoric).

Incipient Health Crisis In The Veg*n Community
|
|
By beforewisdom

Every year for the past several several decades the North American Vegetarian Society ( NAVS ) has hosted Summerfest........a 5 day live in gathering of hundreds of veg*ns.
I went this past summer.
There were plenty of talks given by health professionals and vegans. Some of the big names were Dr. Michael Greger MD, Dr. Michael Klapper MD, Brenad Davis RD, and George Eisman RD.
The consensus among these experts is that a good vegan diet is one of the best things for your health AND that a bad vegan diet is one of the worst things for your health.
One of the messages the speakers strove hardest to expose everyone to through the plenary talks was that of an incipient health crisis in the vegetarian and vegan community.
In a nutshell, vegetarians ( and vegans ) need to regularly use a reliable source of vitamin B-12, increase their calcium intake, increase their intake of fresh green vegetables, increase their intake of fresh yellow/orange vegetables, secure a source of iodine, secure a source of essential fatty acids, reduce their consumption of sweets, minimize their use of refined flour products (pasta, breads, bagels, etc.), and get more exercise.
This is not a new message, but the experts at Summerfest emphasized -- with a palpable sense of caring and urgency -- that many vegetarians and vegans are simply not following this advice, to their great detriment.
This information inspired me to put a web site with links to information from these experts........in a format emphasiszing brevity.......for veg*ns who want to improve their health:

What's wrong with the Heifer Project

"Whats Wrong With The Heifer Project?"
I got a call recently from the Social Justice Chair at a nearby church
asking if our congregation would join in supporting the Heifer Project. She
seemed surprised when I told her I thought Heifer was a feel good charity
that might harm the very people its intended to serve.
